Atkins Florence Oakland

Description

The Florence Oakland is a compact, trailerable gaff-rigged schooner optimized for daysailing and light cruising in coastal or protected waters. At 22'5" LOA, it's a "little ship of tradition" with classic lines—sharp entry, wineglass sections, and a counter stern—evoking 19th-century workboats but built for modern amateurs. Though originally drawn for plywood construction (to meet trailering needs), many builders opt for traditional plank-on-frame with cedar or mahogany for authenticity. It's forgiving to sail, stable, and carries a balanced rig that's easy to handle solo or short-handed. Displacement hull (no planing), with external ballast for righting moment; ideal for family outings, overnights, or gunkholing. John Atkin noted: “In this age of 'efficiency,' it is encouraging to see the continuing interest in the likes of my little gaff-headed schooner Florence Oakland.” Nearly 100 sets of plans sold, with builds documented since the 1980s.

Custom sail calculations are not possible for this boat as no I, J, P and E dimensions are available.
