Alpha 2
Description
Overview of the Alpha 2 Sailboat The Alpha 2 (also styled as ALPHA-2) is an American 18-foot sailing dory designed by Jim Macknezz for amateur boatbuilders, offered by Glen-L Marine Designs since the 1980s. This lightweight, trailerable daysailer draws inspiration from classic New England "Beachcomber-Alpha" club dories and rugged Swampscott dories, modified for modern sheet plywood construction. It's a fractional sloop with a centerboard and shallow-draft rudder, making it ideal for beach launching, beaching, and family day sailing in protected waters like bays, lakes, or coastal areas. The design emphasizes simplicity, seaworthiness, and low cost, suitable for first-time builders or experienced hobbyists. No full production run exists—it's primarily a plans-and-kits model, with hundreds of examples built worldwide by individuals.
