Abbott 36
Description
The Abbott 36 is a performance-oriented fiberglass racer-cruiser designed by Bill Abbott Sr. and built by Abbott Boats Inc. in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. Introduced in the mid-1980s (first built around 1985), it represents the largest in Abbott's line of lightweight, agile sailboats, evolving from the successful Abbott 33 (a development of the Danish Scan-Kap 99). The "DK" variant features a deeper fixed fin keel for enhanced stability and upwind performance compared to the standard or shoal-draft models, making it particularly suited for offshore racing and coastal passages on larger bodies of water like the Great Lakes or Atlantic. With its fractional sloop rig, foam-core construction, and low displacement, the Abbott 36 DK is praised for its speed, responsiveness, and ease of handling—often described as a "light racer" that punches above its weight in club races and long-distance events. Production was limited, as with other Abbotts, but a small fleet remains active, especially in Canada and the U.S. Northeast. Deep Keel version with a draft of 6.5'
